“W-B school board member accused of beating his son,” was the headline which ran in Wednesday’s Citizens’ Voice on a story shocking on so many levels.
It would be shocking even if Robert Corcoran weren’t a school director.
It’s shocking that such a horrid physical battle between father and son exploded on Christmas Eve.
It’s shocking that Corcoran was said to be afraid of his own son.
It’s shocking that a 50-year old allegedly pummeled his bipolar 13-year-old child with his fist and broke his front teeth.
It’s shocking that this violence erupted over two brothers fighting over a box of candy.
But what’s most shocking of all - if true, and we have no proof, yet - is that Corcoran’s wife, Mary Claire, may have witnessed and endured, for whatever reason, years of such violence. She informed the authorities that her husband has been beating their mentally-ill son since he was four-year’s old, “with a belt and fists.”
Then this stunner: “Obviously, we depend on my husband’s income. We don’t want to damage his reputation.”
Needless to say, that ship has sailed, considering Mrs. Corcoran also revealed that her husband “is a danger to the household due to his anger problems and excessive drinking problems.”
We’re not going to touch this one with a ten-foot pole, as they say, especially the part where Mrs. Corcoran may have lived a life of fear and stood by why her child was being hurt physically, and, most certainly, mentally for nine years because she and her children were dependent on Corcoran’s income.
Interestingly, the day before, The Times Leader ran a story reporting the rise in protection from abuse orders being filed in Luzerne County. They got scooped on this big story.
Mrs. Corcoran said this is a private family matter. Not any more it isn’t.
The only thing that is clear for now is that Corcoran needs to resign from the school board, unless he can prove that none of these horrific allegations contain a shred of truth. But unless he has one sick and vindictive family, that’s going to be pretty tough.
